I was blown away by the story of Katherine Johnson when I first heard about it. Johnson was part of a group of Black women mathematicians known as NASA's "human computers" who performed complex calculations by hand before electronic computers became reliable. Her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson also made significant contributions to the space programme.
Johnson's incredible career eventually gained widespread recognition through the 2016 book and film "Hidden Figures", which highlighted how these women overcame both racial and gender discrimination to play crucial roles in America's space achievements. Johnson received numerous honours later in life, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. She passed away in 2020 at the age of 101.
In spite of such inspiring stories, the architecture of gender inequality persists, not necessarily through overt barriers as in centuries past, but through a more insidious mechanism: the systematic devaluation of knowledge domains the moment they become associated with feminine participation. The mythology of meritocracy continues to collide with an inconvenient truth: that our value systems remain profoundly gendered, creating what I term "prestige migration" – a phenomenon where status follows masculine association rather than intrinsic worth.
Just consider the absurdity of computer science. The field offers us a condensed historical narrative of this dynamic. In its nascent stages, programming was women's work; meticulous and detailed, it was thought suitable for the "gentler sex", who also possessed the patience for such tasks. The ENIAC programmers, the human computers of NASA, and the legions of women who laid the computational foundations of our digital age – laboured in a field deemed insufficiently theoretical, too practical, too "applied" to warrant significant prestige or compensation. Yet observe what transpired when the field's potential for power and profit became apparent: a rapid masculinisation accompanied by an equally rapid elevation in status, funding, and cultural cachet.
This is not just a historical oddity but a pattern that continues to replicate itself with algorithmic precision across disciplines and decades. The moment women achieve critical mass in any domain, we witness "value deflation" – a systematic downgrading of that domain's perceived importance, its funding priorities, its award structures, and its very claim to intellectual rigour. This is not a conspiracy but something far more troubling: an unconscious collective re-evaluation that reveals our deepest biases about whose work matters and why.
The contemporary push to increase female participation in STEM fields, while laudable in intent, often perpetuates this particular dynamic through its execution. Women are encouraged, channelled, and sometimes gently coerced into the applied sciences – the practical applications, the human-centred design, and the interdisciplinary work that bridges technical prowess with social impact. Meanwhile, the citadels of pure theory, abstract mathematics, and foundational research remain overwhelmingly male preserves. This is not because women lack the capacity for abstraction – a notion so thoroughly debunked it barely warrants mention – but because our patriarchal institutional structures create pathways that systematically direct women toward domains we systematically undervalue.
The funding mechanisms tell this story with brutal clarity. Theoretical research commands larger grants, more prestigious awards, and greater institutional support. The Nobel Prizes, the Turing Awards, and the Fields Medals – they cluster around theoretical breakthroughs. Meanwhile the painstaking work of application, implementation, and human impact remains relegated to lesser credits. We have generated a hierarchy where touching the human world diminishes value, where practical impact is seen as intellectual compromise, and where the work ironically most likely to improve actual lives is least likely to advance actual careers.
This creates a "recognition trap" – women are welcomed into fields but only into the segments pre-designated as being less valuable. They may enter computer science but are steered toward the user experience rather than algorithm design. They may pursue physics but find themselves channelled toward biophysics rather than theoretical physics. They may engage in mathematics but discover that applied mathematics carries less prestige than pure mathematics. Each of these subfields performs essential work, yet each is valued less precisely because it has become female-coded.
The implications extend far beyond individual career trajectories or the domains of science and technology. By methodically undervaluing applied research, we impoverish our collective future. All the grand challenges facing humanity – climate breakdown, pandemic preparedness, regenerative development, and the evolution of ethical machine intelligence – all require the very integration of theoretical insights with practical applications that we consistently devalue. We've created a prestige economy that rewards distance from human concern rather than engagement with it, abstraction over application, and purity over impact.
The solution demands more than incremental tweaking. We know from prior experience that simply increasing female participation in male-dominated fields while maintaining existing value hierarchies just reshuffles the deck chairs of discrimination. Transformation requires a fundamental recalibration of how we assess worth, distribute resources, and recognise and reward achievement. We must interrogate why we value what we value, examine the gendered assumptions embedded in our prestige hierarchies, and dare to imagine alternative frameworks for excellence.
This isn't about lowering standards or pleading special cases. Rather, it's about recognising that our current standards are themselves artefacts of historical bias, frozen remnants of a worldview that equated masculinity with intellect and femininity with the implementation of masculine ideas. The applied researcher who develops a new cancer treatment protocol contributes no less to human knowledge than the theoretical physicist who advances string theory – possibly more so. Yet our reward structures suggest otherwise.
Institutional courage is needed from universities in order to recalibrate their tenure criteria to equally weight theoretical and applied contributions. Funding agencies must examine their allocation patterns and ask hard questions about whose work they value and why. Award committees must expand their definitions of excellence beyond the narrow confines of pure abstraction. Professional societies must celebrate the full spectrum of intellectual contribution rather than maintaining artificial hierarchies rooted in gendered assumptions.
The digital revolution, the biotechnology boom, and the emergence of artificial intelligence – all such alchemic technologies emerged from the intersection of pure research and practical application. Yet we continue to organise our intellectual economy as if these were separate realms, with one inherently superior to the other. This is not only unjust; it's inefficient, a misallocation of human potential that we can no longer afford.
We need "integrated excellence across all fields of knowledge – a model that values the full spectrum of intellectual contribution, from the most abstract theory to the most grounded of applications. We need funding structures that support long-term theoretical inquiry while equally supporting the translation of insights into human benefit. We need educational pathways that encourage each student, regardless of gender or neurodiverse deviation, to pursue their interests without being channelled into predetermined tracks based on outdated stereotypes.
Most fundamentally, we need to accept that the devaluation of women's work is not a separate issue from the devaluation of applied work – these are twin manifestations of the same underlying bias. By addressing one, we necessarily address the other. By elevating the status of applied research, we create space for women's contributions to be fully valued. By ensuring women's work is fully valued, we enrich our understanding of what constitutes value in our society.
The alternative is to continue our current trajectory – in a world where we systematically undervalue precisely the kinds of integrative, applied, human-centred research most crucial to our collective future. We can't afford such waste. The challenges ahead demand all our intellectual resources, deployed without the artificial constraints of gendered hierarchies.
The revolution required is not merely one of access via affirmative action but of core values. Not merely opening doors but restructuring the entire edifice. Not just allowing women into the academy but transforming what the academy cherishes. This is the work of our generation – to finally align our systems of recognition with our actual needs, our mechanisms of prestige with our genuine priorities, and our definitions of excellence with the full spectrum of human contribution. Only then can we claim to have moved beyond the primitive equation of masculinity with genius and femininity with mere competence. Only then will we be able to unleash the full potential of human intellect in service of human flourishing.
